Public Speaking and Indira Nooyi
Indra Nooyi’s mother, who was a housewife, did not go to college as her parents thought girls should not study and it was too expensive.
But, she always encouraged Indra and her sister Chandrika to “Dream Big”.
She even made a pact with her daughters that if their grades were not good, she would get them married at 18. This pact motivated the sisters to get good grades.
Every night after dinner, Indra’s mother would ask the girls to give speeches. She would tell them to pretend to be the Prime Minister, President or Chief Minister, and give a speech.
She would then critique the girls. In the process of public speaking, Indra and Chandrika understood the value of feedback and importance of expertise (Confident You, The Presenter In You). Today, Indra Nooyi is CEO of PepsiCo and her sister Chandrika is a Grammy nominated musician.
What according to you did their mother do that inspired them? How do you feel about that?
Do you have a night ritual or a morning ritual with your kids? For that matter, any ritual with your children? We would love to know about it and spread the example and the good vibes.
